Whittier Peninsula

Description: This was a graduate student project by Heide Martin for Raffaella Fabiani Giannetto's LARCH 670 course, Autumn 2005. The project goal was to examine the given site of the Whittier Peninsula and develop a method of analysis that would enable one to identify and enhance potential civic space. The project models explore various ways to contort the sensory experiences of the visitor, in an aim to heighten sensory awareness by distorting perception. A path leads you from a formal fountain plaza into a narrow earth tunnel. Image shows a model of a pedestrian bridge that moves from the existing Lazarus warehouse to the water's edge. A steel mesh bridge first passes over an untouchable garden of thistles, thorns, and brambles before being enveloped by the tree canopy as one approaches the water front. Here, the bridge is constructed of wood before one ends on a viewing platform of steel and wood, suspended over the water. --- Heide Martin This work is a part of the online collections of the Knowlton School of Architecture Student Archives, The Ohio State University.
