Description
This was a student project by Aisha Cheema for Sarah Hirschman's course ARCH 2410 in Autumn 2017. The Country House project explored the concept of retreat. Specifically, what constitutes a retreat and in what context. The setting of the project was on a hill, so the topography of the environment surrounding the building was an important contributor to the design of the house. Another important contributor was the sampling from precedents in the design. This project in particular takes cues from Le Corbusier’s work with Villa Stein and the Solo House by Pezo von Ellrichshausen. All of these contributions had to cohesively answer a question of what is considered a retreat and in what context. Expressly, this project indicates that the retreat is to be used as a place to entertain multiple guests and that the residents would prefer to see nature on a retreat rather than to interact with the physical world.
