Suspended Climate - Downtown Athletic Club

Description
This was a student project by Guanming Huang and Zhengda Liu for Andrew Cruse's course ARCH 4420 in Spring 2018. The new Downtown Athletic Club seeks to curate different indoor climates ranging from hot to cold in a unique approach, and proposes an interactive relationship between indoor climates and structure. The design started with looking for an unconventional structure to hold and support various indoor climates, through which we found the diagonal crossing elements of stools an interesting one, and thus it became our prototype for a series of manipulations through which we twisted, changed, and simplified that prototype. The structure allowed indoors climates hanged and suspended in the air with help of pre-tensioning cables, the crossing structure severed as supporting elements and two types of circulation. Meanwhile, the curved floors benefited the spatial quality and movements of indoor climates as well as the dynamics of the building. All these elements contributed to the concept of Suspended Climates in which the idea of curating climates and experimental structure design are put into tension with each other.
