Description
This was a student project by Emma McMonigal for Ndede Misumi's course ARCH 2420 in Spring 2018. The concept for this Dance and Performing Art Center was to create an architectural promenade through a series of ramps that wound its way up to the main lobby of the two auditoriums. The main focus was making the large auditorium the most hierarchical space in the building by making it the highest room in section. The ramp system allows for views throughout the building and some of the turns extend and become balconies integrating the interior and exterior. One of the ramps even cuts through one of the encounter rooms creating in interesting opportunity to see the performance piece in a new way. The main entrance's form was developed from the form of the toy shell project done earlier this semester. This form allows the entrance to act as a funnel and draws people from the cafes, galleries, and the park across the street. The large auditorium also cantilevers over the main entrance and gives people a peak at where their journey will take them, which is similar to Knowlton's promenade and design choices. - Emma McMonigal
