Description
This was a student project by Jonathon Brajdic for Stephen Turk's course ARCH 4410 in Autumn 2018. Both monumental in its spatial presence and experimental in its performative potential, my project aims to create a new destination point for the city of Detroit at the edge of its urban context. Through the use and manipulation of geological sampling processes, artificial landscape-like surfaces emerge atop and within the building. This pixelated language serves to blur the distinction between landscape and architecture--between field and object--between ground and figure. In this sense, it is as much a public park as it is a performance high school. Reimagining the concept of a monument building, my project invites the public to actively explore, inhabit, and engage with its surfaces. To facilitate this public interaction, large figural voids and objects are situated across the site. These figures indicate points of entry and act as public collectors. Through its fostering of social interaction, my project aims to allow for the public and students alike to envision new definitions regarding the scope, means, and methods of performance itself.
