This was a student project by Ethan Lethander for Halina Steiner's course ARCH/LARCH 2310 in Spring 2019.
The parti for this art pavilion is a 9-square grid extruded into three dimensions that governed the possible locations of individual cubes. the final form of the art pavilion was generated through subtraction of nine of the 27 cubes in the arrangement. Apertures puncture the facades and the interior of the structure to create views to the exterior and the interior organization of spaces. For this design, individual cubes were positioned asymmetrically, each facade possessing its own unique shape. Stairs are clustered on the side opposite from the entrance to keep exterior circulatory space compact and organized. As visitors progress through the project they are provided with multiple opportunities to view the art pieces from different angles. An art piece appearing at an earlier point in the project is concealed until a later step in the progression through the project. This also invites situations for interactions between visitors who are experiencing the same exhibition but from different viewpoints.
