What does it mean to reconfigure? To reconfigure a device means to reformat the existing pieces as well as add additional circuits in response to new performance demands. This process requires an unfolding of programmatic pieces to allow for flexibility in addressing contemporary demands. Yet, what has changed at Cranbrook? The philosophy of intellectual exchange between the disciplines has not changed; it is the natural of the exchange that has been altered. Contemporary demands on the structure have resulted in a need for a reinterpretation of what a museum and a library are from both a functional and ideological basis. Our proposal is addressing what we believe are the three main contemporary demands affecting Cranbrook: resource consumption, a need for program plasticity, and the significance of progression. It is focused on addressing evolving demands in both a responsible and responsive manner.
