To survive in Rome you must constantly negotiate the realms of different groups. Each group (gypsie, tourist, umbri army, student) can be thought of as occupying a different city depending on how they use space. These cities are not segregated and organized by partitioning but rather layered on top of each other to form the palimpsest that Rome is. Although it is easier to generalize and identify different groups within the city, defining individual experiences is not so easy. Survival in Rome is about being seen and then vanishing an instant. Controlling who can see you and who cannot will allow you to become part of the city surviving with your own space.
