Pleat and Preserve

Description
Recognized as the first African American neighborhood in the United States and the heart of New Orleans culture, Treme's streets are imbued with centuries-old traditions. Despite this rich heritage, the neighborhood contends with ongoing challenges like urban renewal and the displacement of its long-standing residents. Concerns about the potential loss of these cherished traditions for future generations have sparked recent efforts to help preserve them. To amplify these endeavors, a new type of commons is proposed—one that prioritizes the preservation of Treme's cultural fabric. Located in a space that historically served as a communal area but now lies dormant—a pleat in the urban fabric—the commons aims to avoid adding to community displacement while celebrating and safeguarding Treme's vibrant legacy. It represents not just a physical space, but a commitment to honoring and nurturing the traditions that have shaped this historic neighborhood.
