Beginning with a vacant Greek Polykatoikia housing unit, this adaptive reuse project pulls apart the existing building, inserts new spaces, and reimagines its overall potential using a cross-shaped joint. While this joint original served solely as a method of construction, it is transformed so that the joint becomes the focal point of the project, and the original Polykatoikia becomes a background for which to display all the possibilities of the joint. The joint takes on a new life at three different scales, in which the joint is extended into new furniture, mimicked in circulation that interlaces the building together, and transformed into new structures that display the joint’s shape in plan and section.
