The reimagined site allows visitors to choose their own experience through a series of dynamic spatial rooms and varying recycled ground materials. Travelling up the concrete path, visitors walk through the vegetated doorway of vibrant dogwood to the “carpeted space”. Created by jackhammering existing asphalt and allowing ground cover to soften the hardscape, the space gives visitors a refreshing change of ground and foot experience. A more formal allée sits center of site; with a path made of crushed asphalt, the irregularity of the material invites people to slow down and appreciate the unique form of black locust. Those who continue onwards can find the “rubble meadow”, where people are encouraged to play and explore the wilder conditions. The meadow was constructed by breaking and removing chunks of asphalt and replacing them with ornamental grasses and perennials. The site is bordered by forested conditions of American elm and American hornbeam which act as a privacy screen. The reimagined design follows the existing site’s slant, allowing the plantings to trap water within their depressions and prevent water runoff into the street. The design utilizes the site’s existing materials, increases water absorption, and overall, invites people to take a break from the chaos of Columbus through a series of experiences.~root~>
