- This was a student project by Dave Nedrow for Stephen Turk's ARCH 841 course, Autumn 2007. The site is located in a suburban neighborhood in Worthington Ohio, a commuter community of downtown Columbus. The existing housing typology consists of chaotic mcmansions and cluttered accumulations of redundant gable roofs, faux stone, and a plastering of gingerbread decoration. To combat the existing typology and to offer a new model for ex-urban development as well as commenting on the contemporary nontraditional family composition, an alternative method of development is deployed. ... ... The use of four quadrants is first deployed, divided by the insertion of two urban streets. This initially places the three families and a common gathering space for kitchen and living purposes, as well as re-introduces an urban condition into the suburban site. This creates opportunity for each of the families to receive individualized facades while allowing interaction and stimulating lines of sight. This also gives each family its own public entrance while reconnecting the living spaces to the landscape. The program is carefully arranged to accommodate all the needs while simultaneously creating private gardens that are developed specific to each family need. The house remains hidden from view for neighbors and passersby while the natural landscape that is reestablished gives back to the neighborhood and creates a peaceful environment or escape from exurbia for the inhabitants. - Dave Nedrow This work is a part of the online collections of the Knowlton School of Architecture Student Archives, The Ohio State University.
