Description
A New Threshold is a natural, organic response to the architectural and programmatic problem for the University of Chicago. Drawing from architectural schemes employed by Aalto at Saynatsalo Town Hall and Morse and Stiles by Saarinen, this ensemble of buildings anchors the corner of campus with an iconic tower for students to identify. This project reinterprets the tower massing, exploiting the same vistas as the Logan Arts Center by Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, becoming a recognizable symbol for the University like that of Rockefeller Chapel. Using the context of campus and the fabric of Hyde Park, A New Threshold strengthens the edge of University of Chicago with an impermeable condition that internally bends and breaks to allow the people of the greater Hyde Park to filter through. A sunken canal leading to the theater and dining commons welcomes the public, while the students are privileged with views of the activity below. This concept is familiar, yet new, addressing Hyde Park to form A New Threshold to the campus core.
