This was a student project by Stephen Dinnen for Michael Denison's ARCH 342 course, Autumn 2007. The objective of this quarter was to design an athletic club/social club and spa for the Nationwide District in Columbus, Ohio. The small, rectangular site is located on Neil Ave. and is bounded closely by two adjacent buildings. The design process began with the selection of a rock band. Our studio then had to look up descriptive words for our bands on a website that our instructor recommended. The band that I selected for this project was Radiohead and the words that were chosen were epic, suffocating, distraught, and melancholy. My project developed to be about the word epic and how experiencing the building would become an epic event. I designated the large parts of the program, the pool, the gym, the basketball courts, and the driving range, to be epic spaces. The epic spaces are transformed to create the melancholy, suffocating, and distraught spaces. The form of the epic was derived from the box of the site and the spaces of the gym and basketball courts were cut out of the epic box and shifted to create a main, central entry. By cutting the space out of the middle of the box, the weight of the top bar squeezes space outside of the box. This long, narrow, horizontal, space became the lounge and is characterized as suffocating. ... ... - Stephen Dinnen This work is a part of the online collections of the Knowlton School of Architecture Student Archives, The Ohio State University.
