Description
This is a student project by Joe Brookover from Winter 2010. I am exploring a live/work condition realized in a duplex The unit consists of living space for two bosses, a work space, and a garden space. One boss has a direct connection with his work and, accordingly, his living space is located directly above the work space. His living space has no walls so that he always experiences his work through sights, smells, and sounds. The other boss has a more separate relationship with work so his house is removed from the work condition and is instead surrounded by a garden space. The work space is set to a grid of cubicles located in one half of the duplex and this grid organizes the entire duplex. A tower accommodates two bedrooms, a garage, and a shared office for the bosses, acting as the knot by joining the two living spaces together. Throughout the duplex there exists a condition of uncertainty for the workers. Due to the location of the spaces relative to one another the workers do not know the location of the bosses throughout the day. This gives the bosses the ability to watch the employees from their living spaces, the garage, their office, or the work floor at any given moment, leaving the workers uncertain of if their bosses are watching them. Views through the building are created to accommodate this condition, with cones of view literally piercing through the fabric of the building envelope and diagonal view lines slicing the entirety of the duplex. The cones of view work together with the grid to further organize the site. --Joe Brookover This work is a part of the online collections of the Knowlton School of Architecture Student Archives, The Ohio State University. It is part of an effort to make accessible student work ranging from the first student that graduated from the program in 1903 to the present.
