- For the North Residence at University of Chicago, I decided to double the ground, creating a privatized, maximized outdoor space for the residents while creating a public ground plane that, in place of normative storefronts, creates an opportunity for covered open markets. This interlocks the campus edge with its Hyde Park surroundings by giving opportunity for intermixing between student and neighbor. The second ground, thickened for program, holds all of the community program along with the dining hall, lecture hall and library. The clear sectional divisions become blurred when these pieces of program move throughout the plinth, creating vertical circulation and a world of destinations on the roof. The dorms are divided in to three buildings, an axial longitudinal tower, a cylinder to hold the corner throughout, and an L shape that creates a gateway to campus and unites both differing sides of the site.
