Encirculate

Description: This was a student project by Evan Dobson for Luke Kautz's ARCH 242 course, Winter 2007. The brief for the project was to create an intermodal transportation hub for Columbus, OH with a specific emphasis on rail travel and creating a place of public gathering and commerce. The existing site is a combination parking lot/no man's land that becomes a drain on fluid circulation and by encumbering access to many local attractions and businesses. In order to increase the flows of traffic (rail, light rail, bus, cars, trucks, bicycles) and of pedestrians, the building is lifted to allow these flows to continue unimpeded, and to choreograph the cities infrastructure. By spiraling the building, a loop of clear circulation was provided for mass transit transfers, commerce, and entry into the city. The loop also provided an interior court that becomes park. The park acts as a mediator between the city, transportation, and the scale of people increasing the attraction and interaction of all three. -- Evan Dobson This work is a part of the online collections of the Knowlton School of Architecture Student Archives, The Ohio State University.
