Description
My client is interested in the work of Andreas Gursky, a photographer. His photographs try to capture the order in places where there seems to be none. In our prior project also dedicated to this artist I used the ideas of sliding Jenga pieces to create slots of space for light and for circulation simulating a labyrinth. In this project I used Jenga in a different way. I built five stories of four units each and took two out of each level. The pieces were 15 ft tall and sunk into the lower level 5 ft. In the intersection between two perpendicular units interesting sectional spaces appear. In these spaces I placed the gallery and house program and used the voids for circulation and light wells. The gallery maintains the labyrinth quality and is illuminated from the top while the house is illuminated through the sides. The enclosure of the spaces makes the appearance of the building completely lose the idea of isolated units to represent more intricate interior and exterior walls.
