Description
What defines the quality of a space? A space is comprised of not only something that one sees, but it is something one experiences. When people discuss the nature of a space, people are called 'viewers', when I believe it should transcend the visual and incorporate all the senses. Throughout my education in architecture, people diminish the experience created by the materials to focus on other aspects of the environment. In researching different ways of experiencing architecture, I have encountered that sound is often an under emphasized quality, yet it is one of the most impactful of one's comfort. It is my intention to use sound alone to create a space. In the design, I propose to make an instrument for people to experience where the exterior sounds will attract an audience instead of simply the visual object. The interior juxtaposes the outside, changing the way to experience the instrumental sound qualities. I intend for people to better understand the difference of how sound changes an environment. With our eyes, we tend to forget that our other senses are still working and responding to what is around us. The visual is the first reading, but my intention is to make people aware of the other senses acknowledging the space.
