This student project by Luke Dougal was produced Winter 2012 in Jacqueline Gargus's ARCH 242 class. THE TASK WAS TO DESIGN A HOUSE FOR A QUIRKY OR COMPULSIVE PERSON. IN THIS CASE THE OBSESSION IS WITH NATURE. THE CLIENT IS THE CRAINE FAMILY COMPOSED OF MR.CRAINE AND MRS. CRAINE, THEIR THREE CHILDREN AND MRS. CRAINES FATHER, GRANDPA YOUNG. THE MAIN IDEA IN THIS PROJECT WAS TO GET MR. CRAINE CLOSER IN CONTACT WITH NATURE TO SATISFY HIS DESIRE TO BE IN CLOSE IN CONTACT WITH THE NATURAL WORLD. IT IS PLACED ON A STEEP SLOPED SITE WITH A VIEW DOWN INTO THE RAVINE BELOW.THE FOUR BIGGEST TREES ON THE SITE WERE MAPPED OUT AND THE HOUSE WAS DESIGNED TO INCORPORATE THE TREES AND PROVIDE WAYS TO EXPERIENCE THE TREES AT DIFFERENT HEIGHTS WITH THE USE OF TERRACES. TERRACES EXTRUDE FROM THE HOUSE IN ALL DIRECTIONS PROVIDING MULTIPLE WAYS TO EXPERIENCE THE SURROUNDING NATURE. THIRDLY MANY CURTAIN WALLS WERE PLACED TO ALLOW FOR MORE LIGHT TO ENTER THE HOUSEHOLD. ONLY VERTICAL MULLIANS WERE USED AS A DIRECT REFERENCE TO THE SURROUNDING FOREST. --Luke Dougal~root~>
