- Description
- This was an undergraduate student project by Bryan Wilson for John Kelleher's ARCH 441 course, Autumn 2004. This project was about a the curriculum of a performing arts school and an industrial arts school. This project, which is sited in Columbus, Ohio, integrates an alternative high school and a public park into a highway cap proposal that will span the Interstate 70 trench between the Downtown and German Village districts. The majority of the program is dedicated to the curriculum of a performing arts school and an industrial arts school, although it includes some significant public spaces such as a large theater and recital hall. Unlike most highway cap proposals, which seek to create a seamless connection between two or more isolated districts, this project attempts to recognize and exploit the cultural tension that is associated with this physical boundary. On one side of the trench there is a historic residential district whose primary objective is to maintain its individual identity, while the other side is composed of a fast-paced commercial zone that is constantly looking for room to expand. So, the resulting site becomes a metaphorical battleground where two conflicting districts fight to protect their interests. Meanwhile, the school program acts as a refugee that is caught in the middle. It asserts itself into the intermediate space between these cultural giants, because it is not powerful enough to stand alone. --Bryan Wilson This work is a part of the online collections of the Knowlton School of Architecture Student Archives, The Ohio State University. It is part of an effort to make accessible student work ranging from the first student that graduated from the program in 1903 to the present. The effort to preserve and digitize drawings in the Student Archives was sponsored in part by the Graham Foundation.
