Description
Given the history of Chicago and the fact that it is the birthplace of the skyscraper it seems only apparent to make the comparison with the skyscrapers when designing dormitories for the University of Chicago. The skyscraper tends to convey the idea of what you see is what you get and by chopping/skimming the skyscraper or its fat thereof of its most quintessential part and implementing it on site, the comparison between generic and figural is born. These quintessential fat tower fragments are manipulated, scaled and distorted to create a project that prompts interesting dwelling to public relationships as well as establishing a larger site and historical reference. Manipulated figural extrusions become figures that house public/communal program as well as circulation throughout the various houses. Generic bars, which hold all eight houses, become the backdrop for which the figures are read.
