Description
This was a student project by Joseph Mathias, Lindsey Warner and Mary Webb for Michael Cadwell's ARCH 626 course, Spring 2007. The purpose of this project is twofold: sound absorption and lighting effect. After studying various materials, we chose spray foam insulation because of its sound absorption qualities. We chose to create a lighting effect by spraying a layer of foam insulation onto a flat surface, then attaching it to a wire, three-dimensional truss frame, so it may be suspended from above. The result is an intestinal, funnel-cake-like pattern that is random, which pays attention to structural cohesiveness. We believe that this effect is not only successful, but also has interesting qualities which could be useful for future architectural implications.-- Joseph Mathias, Lindsey Warner and Mary Webb
