This was a student project by Tyler Hardie for Zachary Snyder's ARCH 341 course, Autumn 2008. The project's prompt was to design a 150-square-foot reading room in one of four conditions: on, in, under, or above the ground. I chose the above ground condition for the project. The driving question for the project was, how can a system interact with the ground to create structure, circulation,and volume?. My solution was a repetition of woven P shaped bands of wood. The bands acted as a column on the ground and transformed into the wall, ceiling, and floor of the reading room. The programmatic bands were the largest and offset from the volumetric bands of wood to create a visual hierarchy and articulate the programmatic spaces of the room. - Tyler Hardie This work is a part of the online collections of the Knowlton School of Architecture Student Archives, The Ohio State University.
