Urban Crap(s)

Description: This was a student project by Ryan Keener for John Kelleher's ARCH 442 course, Winter 2007. Considering Columbus, Ohio is a product of urban sprawl, and is now faced with revitalizing its downtown urban core the invitation of a casino could be cancerous. Topological trends in Las Vegas are moving towards suburban malls with space for gambling, and hotel accommodations. An ideal cluster of resorts that connect to form an unprecedented vacation-city is a reality that Columbus could never compete with. In an effort to not replace City Center (an urban drosscape) with another mall; this scheme suggests a large exterior public park that adds to the urban fabric, and blankets the casino program. A wall of hotel would form the volume of the mat building only to be punctured by programs more common to the existing city fabric; i.e.: retail, restaurants, and bars. - Ryan Keener This work is a part of the online collections of the Knowlton School of Architecture Student Archives, The Ohio State University.
