This was a student project by Stephanie Donovan for Jason Kentner's LARCH 624 course, Autumn 2006.
The project began with tests that explored materiality and manipulated the phonebook through exerting varying pressures, cutting the binding, gluing for texture effects, and piercing for fastening. A second study of the material on a scale of multiples revealed the assets and limitations of using phonebooks in a seating element and also investigated how forms can be tectonically stabilized. To form the base rolls, Yellow Pages were individually secured by zip ties, which were then wired together into bundles. To form the surface flaps, White Pages were individually secured by drilling a hole in the center and fastening wire or string around the partially rolled binding. Two extra holes were drilled on either side of the initial hole of the flap to string and attach to the bundles. -- Stephanie Donovan
