Wawel hill was the location of the central power in Krakow: the Wawel Castle and the Wawel Cathedral. The hill was first fortified in the 9th century. The current cathedral was built at the end of the 14th century and Wawel Castle was built in the early 16th century by Sigismund I. The castle was home to the Nazi governor general, Hans Frank, during Poland's occupation. It has undergone decades of restoration.
