Commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm II and opened in 1904. Ernst von Ihne was the head government building officer, who was one of best known Wilhelminian Baroque designers. It suffered severe damage in World War II, especially the dome. After reunification and the fall of the Berlin Wall, general reconstruction began. In August 2000, general restoration began. In October 2004, part of the museum (the Numismatic Collection) was opened in time for the 100th anniversary. In October 2006, the museum was reopened in its entirety.
