Brasov, a fortified town from the 13th century, was one of the important commercial and manufacturing centers in Romania. In the second half of the 19th century, most of its fortifications were pulled down and the town began to sprawl. Presently, its cultural activities, resorts, and picturesque surroundings have helped Brasov become a primarily tourist destination.
