Description
Vitra, a well-known furniture manufacturer, commissioned new buildings from several leading architects (Frank Gehry, Alvaro Siza, Nicholas Grimshaw, Tadao Ando and Zaha Hadid) for their company's site near Basel. Charter-spheres were developed by Thomas C. Howard of Synergetics, Inc. This charter-sphere dome, erected in 1954 in Detroit, was transferred to the Vitra Campus at Weil am Rhein in 2000. Charter-Spheres are easier to erect than geodesic domes. The dome at the Vitra Campus was constructed as a lightweight structure with a membrane cover and is currently used as a space for events by the Vitra company.
