Description
Cape May is located on a peninsula at the southernmost tip of New Jersey between the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay. The community is noted for its single family and multi-family historic cottages, many of which are considered exemplars of the Victorian Style of architecture.
Congress Hall was built in 1816 as a boarding house for summer visitors to Cape May, a seaside resort. Thomas H. Hughes (the original owner) originally called his boarding house "The Big House". However, local people nicknamed it "Tommy's Folly." In 1828, Hughes was elected to Congress and in honor of his new status the hotel was renamed "Congress Hall."
