Description
At Colonia Guell, the 'Crypt' of the lower level remains as the only finished portion of Gaudi's grand plan for a church on the site. Built for the textile factory workers, the church was commissioned by Gaudi's frequent patron and good friend, Eusebi Guell. Although construction was halted in 1914, the Bishop of Barcelona blessed the lower nave the following year, and the Crypt has been in use ever since. The Crypt in Colonia Guell shows great innovation in structural and material techniques, as Gaudi implements basalt, limestone, burnt ceramic bricks, smelting slag, ceramics, and glass to achieve a variety of sculptural effects.
