Description
The Eulenspiegel fountain is located at the corner of the Alter Markt (old market) and faces the old Town Hall. The fountain was erected in 1970 and designed by Heinrich Apel. It is dedicated to the famous 14th century jester Till Eulenspiegel who played pranks on the people of Magdeburg. "Legend has it that he came to the Alter Markt and told the citizens of Magdeburg he could fly from the roof of the Town Hall. Quite a number of citizens came to the old market at the promised hour to see this happen. But in the end they were just mocked and ridiculed by Eulenspiegel for their incredible gullibility." -- http://www.magdeburg-tourist.de/englishmd.phtml Keywords: Germany, Saxony-Anhalt, Magdeburg (national district), Magdeburg, Magdeburger, sculpture, hydraulic structure, fountains, outdoor market, traditional market, owl mirror well, Eulenspiegel fountain.
