Description
Construction of the pagoda began in the Tang Dynasty and follows the type of Buddhist square pagoda typical of this dynasty. The Fang Ta was completed in the Yuan You period of the Song Dynasty. It is located on Zhongshan Road east of Songjiang County. In front of the Square Pagoda stands a brick screen wall on which is sculptured a legendary creature named "Tan" featuring deer antlers, a lion's tail, dragon scales and the hooves of an ox.
