Description
Reston opened in 1965 under the guidance of Robert E. Simon, Jr. The initials of the founder (R.E.S) gave the new community its name. Reston was one of the first planned communities in the United States. It is located about 17 miles from Washington, D.C. Reston is divided roughly into 7 villages of 10,000 people each. Each village center is designed with a sensitivity to the topography and natural features of the site. First Village, also called Lake Anne Village, is located at the head of the new lake created by the dam in Colvin Run. The First Village Center is a successful example of the modern planned community. The image shows the high-rise building at the First Village Center. The building provides apartments for single people and small households. This image was taken in 1967 by John Schooley, FAIA, during an Urban America tour. Urban America tours allowed architects and planners to visit New Towns and meet professionals involved in their planning and continued development.
