Description
The soap-manufacturing firm of Lever Brothers started Port Sunlight, a one-industry development five miles up the Mersey river from Birkenhead and seven miles from the center of Liverpool. Port Sunlight's merit lies in its early use of what came to be known as the "superblock", in its park and individual buildings. Port Sunlight was developed by Lord Leverhulme to improve the quality of life for Lever Brothers' workers and their families.
