"The Pyramid of the Magician, a name given in modern times, stands in the largest and probably most powerful city in the Yucatán. One version of the pyramid's origin is the legend of the dwarf. It began when a witch nurtured an egg that hatched a dwarf with magic powers. The dwarf, with the witch's encouragement, challenged the king of the city to a series of contests. In one round, the dwarf was challenged to build the largest structure he could in one night. The dwarf awoke atop the newly erected pyramid he created.
The 93-foot-high (28 meters) pyramid has two distinct profiles. On the west side, a treacherously steep staircase leads to a temple with a front facade that forms a giant mask of the rain god Chac. The east side has a milder slope with a temple at the summit decorated with interlocking geometric patterns."
