This view looks southward at the remains of the previous cathedral.
Saint Michael's Cathedral was originally built in 1043 but was destroyed in World War II. The decision to rebuild the cathedral was made the morning after its destruction. The competition to design the new cathedral was won by Basil Spence who insisted that the ruins of the old cathedral be left intact. The new building would be build alongside the ruins and the two structures would combine to form the new cathedral. Queen Elizabeth laid the foundation stone on 23 March 1956. The new cathedral was consecrated on 25 May 1962, in the presence of the Queen.
