Description
Arnolfo di Cambio began the design for the cathedral in 1296. Giotto became the architect in 1334 and designed the Campanile. Francesco Talenti continued the project and modified the Cambio plan from 1357 to 1367. In 1418 a competition was held for the dome. Brunelleschi won the competition in 1420. He and Ghiberti were appointed supervisors and construction on the dome that year. Ghiberti was dismissed in 1425 and began work on the Baptistery Doors. The dome was completed by Brunelleschi in 1434. The Cathedral is on the Piazza del Duomo. Submitted by Aimee Moore.
