Description
The Sachsische Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitatsbibliothek (S.L.U.B.) was planned 1/2 story below ground level in order to not interrupt the city's skyline. "The building itself is composed of two stone blocks of equal size that face each other across a lawn. Centrally positioned between the two blocks an area of glass that matches the floor area of either block is set flush in the lawn, forming the skylight for the central reading room below. This reading room is the core of a three-storey library plinth that extends beneath the lawn across the entire area of the former sports grounds." --http://www.ortner.at/dr1e.html Keywords: Germany, Saxony, Sachen, Dresden, libraries, Saxony State Library, Saxon Federal and State Library, Dresden University Library, SLUB. Submitted by Hazel Morrow-Jones. The Saxon Federal and State Library and Dresden Technology University, or Sächsische Landesbibliothek - Staats und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden (SLUB), is a library with merged catalogs from the Saxon city library of Dresden and the library of Technische Universität Dresden (TUD). It consolidated the vast catalogs that were previously divided among buildings all over Dresden. It contains over seven million books and data media, many of which were stored in palaces throughout Dresden during World War II to save them from destruction although not all were spared.
