Description
The Southern Theater was built in 1896. It is located on the east side of the Great Southern Hotel, a six-story building opened in 1897. While the hotel was refurbished in the mid-1980s the theater closed down in the late 1970s. The theater reopened in 1998. At its widest, the auditorium measures 66 feet; the ceiling over the second balcony is 60 feet above the stage. The auditorium also has a distinctive series of concentric arches radiating out from the proscenium to the balcony. The theater is a regular venue for chamber music, jazz and operettas. The hotel is now called The Westin Great Southern.
