Description
The developer Vanke became interested in the vernacular housing typology unique to southern China: the defensive, inward looking Tulou roundhouse of the Hakka people. Urbanus hoped it would be culturally recognizable to migrant workers from rural areas and also counter the exclusivity and isolation of China's gated communities. The project mixes income levels by unit type (sudios, dorms, apartments) and retail space and a library. The ventilated brick and timber screen facade fits for the muggy climate of Guangzhou.
